The Austria student visa: from admission to enrollment

Admission first, everything else second

In Austria, applying for a visa without university admission is pointless. Most applications run through the universities' own portals — or, in some fields such as medicine, a central system. Deadlines are usually September for the winter semester and March for the summer semester — which means planning backwards: count back from the visa deadline, not forward from today.

Financial proof: the number everyone asks about

Students under 24 must show roughly €723 per month (2026 figure); those 24 and older around €1,308 per month — usually as a deposit in an Austrian blocked account or a declaration of guarantee. The amount must cover twelve months. The figure rises slightly every year, so confirm the current number before opening the account.

The choice of bank matters: some will not open student accounts for non-EU citizens, and some do not accept the embassy's specific guarantee letters. Get the updated list from your consultant.

Visa D or student residence?

If your semester starts soon, the three-month Visa D is faster and converts into the student residence title (Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Studierender) after arrival. If you have time, applying directly for the 12-month residence permit is cleaner. Both require the same documents; the difference is processing time.

After arrival: the first week

Register your address (Meldezettel) within three working days, sign the rental contract, activate your student-insurance e-card, and complete in-person enrollment at the university — the order matters, because some steps require the previous ones. And a happy note: students may work up to 20 hours per week (more in some practical programmes).

Three mistakes we see every year

First: a translation whose dates don't match the original. Second: insurance that doesn't start on the day of arrival — coverage must be gapless. Third: an appointment booked less than three weeks before travel with the file still incomplete. They're simple, and every year they sink a few cases.
