The complete family reunification checklist for Austria

Who can apply?

Spouses (registered marriage and, in limited cases, registered partnership), unmarried children under 18, and parents — though parents only in specific circumstances and mostly via alternative routes. For children over 18 there is realistically no direct route; better to be honest about that than to waste anyone's time.

The resident's three pillars

First, income: sustainably equivalent to the standard minimum wage plus an amount per additional family member. Second, housing: the Austrian standard is roughly 10 square metres per person, but the spirit of the law is "adequate". Third, insurance: full coverage for every joining family member.

The three pillars are assessed together; a weakness in one neutralizes the other two.

Documents: the practical checklist

Marriage certificate with certified translation and apostille where needed, passports and birth certificates for all members, standard photos, proof of the resident's income (employment contract or last three payslips), rental contract or property deed, insurance policy, and the application letter — date and signature included. Language certificates for the joining spouse are usually not required at first filing, but matter at extension and long-term residence.

Realistic timing

Processing family reunification cases takes 3–9 months, depending on the province and the authority's workload. "Complete" documents matter exactly as much as "reasoned" ones — short explanatory letters pre-answer the questions a caseworker would otherwise raise.

Why cases get rejected

Three reasons account for nearly every refusal: gaps in income proof (a job change mid-case, for example), housing that in practice doesn't fit the number of people, and relationship documents that don't complete the story. A strong file is an unambiguous story of a real shared life.
